During the early 1970s, the Nixon administration and the CIA were concerned about the possibility of another communist regime emerging in South America. As a result, they provided support for a coup against Salvador Allende, who had been promoting "The Chilean road to socialism." On September 11, 1973, Allende was overthrown and a military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet was established, which lasted for 17 years and resulted in thousands of exiles, detained individuals being tortured and disappearing.
